External vs. Internal vs. Self-Inflicted

Before you can manage stress effectively, you first need to understand its source. Stress comes from three primary places:

  • External stressors — pressures that come from outside of you: deadlines, financial strain, workplace demands, relationship tension, or family responsibilities. These are usually situational and often outside of your direct control.
  • Internal stressors — pressures from within: negative thought patterns, perfectionism, unrealistic expectations, lack of boundaries, or fear. These are often subtler but can be just as damaging because they influence how you interpret and react to everything.
  • Self-inflicted stressors — stress we bring on ourselves: overcommitting, perfectionism, poor planning, ignoring warning signs, and saying yes when you mean no. These often disguise themselves as ambition, responsibility, or kindness.

You can't always eliminate external stress. Life will always bring challenges. But you can control how you respond — and how much stress you create internally.

Key Insight
Awareness Is the First Step Toward Peace

When you learn to separate what's happening to you from what's being created by you, you begin to take your power back. That awareness is the first step toward peace, clarity, and resilience.

Breaking the Cycle of Self-Inflicted Stress

Self-inflicted stress is the kind that slowly builds over time, often disguised as ambition, responsibility, or even kindness. The good news? These patterns can be changed once you see them:

  • Overcommitting → Practice prioritizing and saying no
  • Perfectionism → Shift your focus from perfect to progress
  • Poor planning → Build structure and routine into your days
  • Ignoring warning signs → Listen to your body and mind when they signal overload
  • Saying yes when you mean no → Set and honor your boundaries

Where Is Your Stress Coming From?

Take a moment to identify:

  • One external stressor you're currently dealing with
  • One internal stressor (a thought pattern or fear)
  • One self-inflicted stressor (something you could change)
